European Week of Sport 2016 to kick off in Kosice, Slovakia
This year’s European Week of Sport will take place on the week commencing 10 September 2016 after the inaugural event attracted 5m participants in 2015.
Festivities will begin in Kosice, Slovakia – the European City of Sport in 2016 – alongside parallel schemes taking place in more than half of the 34 participating countries.
Susanne Hollmann of the European Commission revealed the plans to delegates at the EU Sport Forum, adding that this year complementary national weeks will also be held in each of the participating countries between 10 September and 7 October.
The flagship event will occur on 15 September in Brussels, Belgium, which will include a conference on good governance, workshops and the #BeActive Awards, names after the title branding for the European Week of Sport.
Between 7 and 13 September 2015, 5m people took part in 7,000 events in 34 host countries. The four themes for the week – which will be the same as last year’s – are education, workplace, outdoors and sport clubs and fitness centres.
