European football hit by match-fixing arrests
German police have confirmed a number of people have been arrested in connection with match-fixing allegations relating to the outcomes of around 200 football matches across Europe.
European football's governing body, UEFA, has been helping German authorities with their investigations, which concern to domestic fixtures in nine individual countries, as well as 12 Europa League and three Champions League games. UEFA general secretary Gianni Infantino said: "This case proves that it is possible for a state investigative authority to work closely together with a sports governing body when it comes to corruption or match-fixing.
"UEFA will be demanding the harshest of sanctions before the competent courts for any individuals, clubs or officials who are implicated in this malpractice, be it under state or sports jurisdiction."
