UCI, the world governing body for cycling, has tabled plans to extend the 2016 Olympic Games cycling programme to include three extra events.

Among the new events would be freestyle BMX biking and an additional mountain bike eliminator event, adding to the two race events held at London 2012.

If successful, the addition of BMX freestyle would be the first time that an extreme sport discipline would feature at a summer Olympic Games.

The winter Olympic Games already features a number of freestyle skiing events as well as a halfpipe (snowboarding) competition.

UCI announced the plans during a management committee held in Louisville, US on the eve of the Cyclo-cross World Championships.

In a statement, the organisation said: "With regards to the 2016 Olympic Games to be held in Rio de Janeiro (BRA), the Management Committee expressed its support for a proposal to be made to the International Olympic Committee for the addition to the cycling programme of a points race and BMX Freestyle and Mountain Bike Eliminator events for both men and women."
