FAB scheme works on Leicester estate
A pilot project which encourages people with a range of illnesses and disabilities to exercise has secured funding to run for a further two years.
The Fit and Active Braunstone project (FAB) works in an estate in Leicester which faces issues of social exclusion, deprivation and isolation.
The Scheme is funded by Sport England and New Deal for Communities and is hosted by Leicester City West PCT.
The project works with residents suffering low self esteem, mild mental health problems and other illnesses and disabilities.
It aims to help people to take the first step towards a healthy lifestyle by providing intensive, one to one support to identify and overcome barriers to physical activity.
This includes attending exercise sessions with participants of the scheme as buddies until they are able to attend themselves.
Initially a two-year pilot project, FAB has now received £245,000 from the European Social Fund for a further 19 months from November 2005. It aims to reach more Braunstone residents and ultimately expand to other estates in Leicester.
