The international football federation (FIFA) has blasted the English Premier League’s proposals to host games abroad.

The opposition from the world governing body means that plans to create a round of 10 competitive fixtures to be played across the world in January 2011 are left dead in the water.

Premier League officials were hoping to stage an ‘international round’, to be played in addition to the traditional 38 home and away matches that each of the 20 Premier League Clubs currently play.

It was estimated that each club participating would earn an extra £5m in revenue from the venture abroad.

In an interview with the BBC, Blatter told in no uncertain terms of the level of resistance the Premier League would be facing if it decides to push for the plans.

"This will never happen," he said. “This is something I cannot understand and definitely the FIFA executive committee will not sanction such an initiative."

Earlier, Richard Scudamore, chief executive of the Premier League, defended the proposals.

“The international round is an exciting and innovative proposal that needs consideration before being introduced,” he said.

“However, this concept recognises the truly global appeal of the Barclays Premier League, while understanding that the traditions of the English game have always underpinned our success.”
