Football clubs are to be paid a share of £142m (US$210.5m, €195.7m) for releasing their players to the next two World Cup tournaments in Russia and Qatar, Fifa has announced.

The agreement, which has been made to provide stronger integration between international and club level, is nearly three times the value of the existing deal, which stands at £47m (US$69.7m, €64.7m).

The player release deal is relatively new, having first been established for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

"The agreement puts the emphasis on fundamental principles such as the promotion of training and player development as well as the sporting integrity of the competitions, in the interests of the game and its appeal to the public," said a Fifa statement.

"In addition, Fifa will continue with the Club Protection Programme, by which clubs are compensated for losses incurred due to players being injured while on international duty.

"The Club Protection Programme will therefore be extended to at least until after the end of the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar."
