Final approval for Donington Park upgrade
The planned £100m redevelopment of Donington Park motor racing circuit near Kegworth, Leicestershire, is back on track after the project received final planning permission from the local authority.
North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC) approved proposals for the first stage of improvements at the venue in January on the condition that a section 106 agreement was signed by all relevant parties. However, circuit owner Simon Gillett and landowner Tom Wheatcroft have now signed the document, enabling work to re-commence on refurbishing the circuit in time to host the British Formula One Grand Prix in June 2010.
The proposed redevelopment of Donington Park includes the reconstruction and relocation of the venue's paddock and pit complex and the extension of the existing race track, which has been designed by renowned Formula One circuit architect, Hermann Tilke. A new media and race control centre, a clubhouse and hospitality suites are also set to be created at Donington Park, which is set to stage its first Formula One Grand Prix since 1993 after it was announced that it would replace Silverstone in Northamptonshire for a 10-year period.
Gillett said: "There's no denying that we still have a lot of hard work ahead but we'll continue to remain positive and do everything that we can to deliver against the promises we have made. "The construction work is obviously extremely important, but we're also trying hard to ensure that it doesn't compromise the experience that our visitors to forthcoming events have."
