Final approval for Old Trafford revamp
Plans for the multi-million pound redevelopment of Manchester's Old Trafford cricket stadium have been approved by secretary of state Eric Pickles.
Earlier this summer, Government Office North West revealed that it would not challenge Trafford Council's decision to approve the scheme; a move that has now been backed by Pickles. A partnership including Lancashire County Cricket Club (LCCC), Ask Developments and Tesco can now push forward with plans for the £32m scheme following the decision.
Two new grandstands and a refurbished pavilion are mooted as part of the Old Trafford overhaul, which will increase capacity to 15,000 spectators - rising to 25,000 with temporary eating. Floodlights and a screen for action replays will also be installed at the ground, which is being redeveloped in a bid to secure an Ashes Test match in 2013 after losing out last year to Cardiff.
Plans also include a wider scheme to regenerate a 50-acre (20-hectare) site surrounding the ground, which will include a new supermarket and mixed-use neighbourhood. LCCC chief executive Jim Cumbes said: ""We can now press on with redeveloping the famous Old Trafford cricket ground and securing our place as one of the world's best cricketing arenas.
"The government has backed the council's recognition of the important role the club plays in supporting Trafford's economy - especially through hosting international matches like the Ashes."
