Football Remembers Week to celebrate centenary of Christmas Truce match

By Tom Walker    03 Oct 2014
Arsenal striker Theo Walcott and president of the FA Prince William are playing active roles in the Football Remembers Week

A week of football-related remembrance activity will take place in December this year to commemorate the centenary of the famous 1914 Christmas Truce football match.

The Football Remembers Week will mark the 100th anniversary of the remarkable event, when soldiers from both sides of the trenches at World War I laid down their weapons to play a game of football, share drinks and exchange gifts on "no man’s land" across the battlefields of the Western Front.

A joint project between The Football Association (FA), Premier League, Football League and the British Council, the week-long remembrance period will begin on 6 December.

Activities will include every team in the Premier League and Football League taking part in a combined photo before their games on the weekend of 6 December, as happened on the battlefields on the Western Front.

Amateur and grassroots clubs can also get involved, with every FA-registered club, county FA and UK primary and secondary school being sent instructions on how to create their own iconic, pre-match shots.

All images can be uploaded on a specially-designed website over the course of Football Remembers Week.

The FA and the Army Football Association are working on joint commemorations involving their counterparts in Europe, while UEFA – European football’s governing body – is also planning its own activity.

Prince William, president of FA, said the event will remind players and fans – as well as the general public – of the power of sport and the positive effect it can have on lives.

“It promises to be a powerful way to engage and educate young people about such an important moment in our history,” the Prince said.

“We all grew up with the story of soldiers from both sides putting down their arms on Christmas Day, and it remains wholly relevant today as a message of hope over adversity, even in the bleakest of times.”
