Former FA boss in FIFA 'bribery' claims

By Pete Hayman    12 May 2011
FIFA has requested evidence from the FA and the Sunday Times

Former Football Association (FA) chair Lord Triesman has claimed that four FIFA officials of seeking 'bribes' in exchange for backing England's unsuccessful 2018 World Cup bid.

Speaking to the culture, media and sport committee on 10 May, Lord Triesman's allegations concerned Jack Warner; Nicolas Leoz; Ricardo Teixeira; and Worawi Makudi. According to Lord Triesman, he and Premier League chair Sir Dave Richards were asked to provide £2.5m and £500,000 for projects in Trinidad and Tobago and Haiti by Warner.

Lord Triesman also claimed that Leoz had requested a knighthood; that Teixeria was 'open to offers'; and that Makudi wanted TV rights to a friendly between Thailand and England. When asked if he had reported his concerns to FIFA, Lord Triesman said: "In retrospect, we would have burned off our chances [of hosting the 2018 World Cup].

It came as the committee also received written evidence from the Sunday Times that FIFA executive members had accepted payment for supporting Qatar's 2022 bid. FIFA has announced that it has written to both the FA and the Sunday Times to provide evidence of the claims against the officials.

A FIFA spokesperson said: "In his letter to the FA, the FIFA secretary general [Jerome Valcke] expresses the extreme concern of FIFA and the FIFA president at the latest allegations questioning the integrity of some FIFA executive committee members."
