Funding boost for athletics clubs

By Pete Hayman    26 Jan 2009

England Athletics (EA) has announced the first ten grassroots projects which are to receive a share of a £300,000 funding package as part of its McCain Athletics Networks initiative.

Launched in November, the scheme is designed to give thousands of people the chance to make athletics a regular part of their lives through clubs working together to establish 'networks' across the country. Among the aims of the first wave of projects is the development of road running, increased participation of children in athletics and improvements to the provision of disability athletics.

The selected prospective networks include Avon; Armada, based in Plymouth, Devon; the Black Country; Calderdale in Yorkshire; County Durham; Derbyshire; Hertfordshire; Manchester; Newham, East London; and Sussex. McCain Foods is funding the £300,000 investment, with match-funding provided by Sport England. It is hoped that the first wave of projects will also bring in more than £250,000 in additional partnership.

EA is planning to invest more than £1m in the Athletics Networks venture each year until 2013 in a bid to support and empower clubs and coaches, while also encouraging them to to help lead the future of athletics in England. Mike Summer, EA chief executive, said: "Supporting the growth of clubs, and in particular coaching in clubs, is a top priority for England Athletics. During the next four years we will invest significant resources into both these areas of work.

"All 10 prospective club networks have recognised the importance of providing high quality coaching at all levels and across all disciplines to enhance enjoyment and satisfaction levels among members." Applications for the second stage of funding have now opened, with Stage One proposals forms due to be submitted by 6 February.
