G-14 proposes biennial football World Cups

By Helen Patenall    05 Jun 2006

The G-14 European Football Club Grouping – a European Economic Interest group (EEIG) registered in Brussels – has reportedly proposed to double the frequency of the football World Cups, which are currently held every four years.

However, Fifa – the world football authority – and UEFA – the European body -– are allegedly not backing the move.

The G-14 Group comprises 18 European football clubs and commissioned Dutch consultancy Hypercube to compile a 36-page presentation called Grand Slam World to put forward their ideas.

A second possibility is Grand Slam Euro, which proposes that Continental tournaments, such as the European championship, be held every two years.

A third and final option recommends that weaker countries could pre-qualify for Continental championships, which would allow an expansion of the European Champions League.

Currently, Europe’s top football clubs annually contest the championships but, if approved, this option could result in the qualification of a further 16 clubs and a consequent increase of 144 Champion League matches. Details: www.gl4.com
