GLL athletics tracks achieve grade A certification

By Tim Nash    05 Dec 2011

In the build up to London 2012 and the IAAF World Athletics Championships 2017, all seven of GLL's purpose built athletics tracks have achieved grade A status - as defined by UK Athletics (UKA).

The newly certified tracks will see London now able to offer 18 grade A tracks - more than ever before - creating a host of opportunties for elite athletes and pathway training. Part of a genuine sporting legacy for both athletics clubs and local communities, these elite facilities will now form the backbone of pre Olympic and World Athletics Championships training programmes.

Following an on-going investment and significant upgrading programme, GLL's seven grade A tracks include the eight lane, 400m, Mile End Park Athletics Track - all set to host an Olympic nation prior to the games - and Newham Leisure Centre (Terrence McMillan Stadium) identified by LOCOG as a Games Time Training Venue in 2012, which also boasts access to indoor sprints, high jump and pole vault facilities.

Other GLL tracks certified as grade A and according to UKA suitable for 'all competition' are: Barnet Copthall Stadium; Crystal Palace National Sports Centre; Sutcliffe Park Athletics Track; Waltham Forest Pool and Track and Bannister Stadium.

Mick Barlow, GLL athletics development manager commented, "GLL is committed to supporting athletics development at its all-purpose centres - from investment in facilities and equipment through improved access to grant aid assistance via the GLL Sport Foundation for individuals and athletics groups.

"Achieving grade A status is all thanks to our hard-working athletics development team and track-specific staff who have eradicated any shortfalls and helped to transform our sporting venues, providing a lasting legacy to engage local communities in athletics and sport."

All of the GLL-run athletics facilities support club athletes, many of which have gone on to represent England and/or Great Britain. Athletes include: Andy Turner; Conrad Williams; Perri Shakes Drayton; Larry Achike; Tosin Oke and Nadia Williams.

And, 13 GLL -managed sports venues have been included in the accredited 'Pre Games Training Camps Guide', issued by the London Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The venues have been selected for a range of sporting disciplines - everything from athletics and swimming to judo and volleyball - and make up more than 13% of the 96 facilities on offer within London.
