Garden centre outlines vision for £6m leisure development
The owners of a large garden centre in Preston have revealed plans for a £6m on-site leisure development, which would include only the second curling rink in England.
The proposed ‘Flower Bowl’, which would be a multi-purpose leisure site attached to Barton Grange Garden Centre, would feature a four-ice sheet curling rink, a cinema, a ten pin bowling facility, plus indoor and outdoor crazy golf courses. There would also be a diner-style restaurant, a fish and chip eaterie, plus an ice cream parlour and cafe, while a kayak shop would sell and rent boats for use on the neighbouring Lancaster Canal.
Architecture practice etcurban is behind the plans for the centre – also set to feature a grass roof – which were presented to Wyre Council last week, with a view to submitting a full planning application in December. If planning permission is granted, work will likely begin in late 2015, with the hope of opening the development in Q2 of 2017.
“This is a major new development for us which we believe will bring much needed entertainment and leisure facilities to the area,” said MD of Barton Grange Garden Centre, Guy Topping.
“The emphasis is on quality, premium facilities throughout. Our main target audience is the more mature market although there will of course be many opportunities for families with young children to come along and get involved.”
