Gateshead eyes full-time move as more clubs struggle

By Pete Hayman    21 Oct 2009

Gateshead Football Club (GFC) has announced it plans to become full-time from the start of the 2010-11 season in order to boost its bid for promotion to the Football League.

The move will coincide with the 50th anniversary of the Blue Square Premier club's demotion from the League in 1960, although a small number of places will be earmarked for part-time players in a proposed 24-man squad. However, the announcement comes as two other non-league clubs continue to fight for survival. Bromsgrove Rovers Football Club (BRFC) has confirmed that it has entered administration in order to stave off a winding up petition.

Meanwhile, the Dorset Echo has reported that Weymouth Football Club (WFC) has been hit with payment demands from both Barclays Bank and Denmark-based brewer Carlsberg. According to the newspaper, former chair Malcolm Curtis had threatened to demand the repayment of a £221,000 loan if the clubs failed to settle its debts with Barclays and Carlsberg.

A local businessman has now intervened to help the troubled Blue Square South side with a sponsorship deal aimed at securing the club's short-term future. Elsewhere, Forest Green Rovers Football Club (FGRFC) has received formal approval from the Football Association, Gloucestershire Football Association and Football Conference to bring the club under the control of a new limited company in a bid to generate an additional £100,000.

FGRFC spokesperson Colin Peake said: "This latest change is part of the whole process of the club being in the best financial position it can be for the future and what may lie ahead over the horizon for us all, let alone the football club. As we all know from recent experience, that can come as a shock if you are not best prepared." "Initially, through our restructure and the issuing of shares, the club seek to bring in £100,000 of new money and investment possibilities. The club will therefore be pursuing all avenues open to it at this time, in an attempt to raise these funds with a minimum of delay."
