George Washington presidential library to open in US
Virginia's planned presidential library for George Washington has achieved its US$100m (76.9m euro, £66.5m) capital campaign goal ahead of schedule with a gift from one of the United States' foremost philanthropists.
The Mount Vernon Ladies' Assocation revealed on what would have been Washington's 281st birthday that David M. Rubenstein had donated US$10m (7.7m euro, £6.7m) to the Fred W. Smith National Library for the Study of George Washington.
The association is charged with running Washington's neighbouring historic plantation home, which has been open to visitors since 1860.
The 45,000sq ft (4,181sq m) library will include books, manuscripts and archival material, and a 6,000sq ft (557sq m) residence for visiting scholars, authors and interns.
The funding will go towards the construction of the library, at a location near Washington's former home Mount Vernon, an endowment for US$4m (3.1m euro, £2.7m) of rare books and manuscripts, and seed funding for a leadership programme.
In recognition of Rubenstein's gift, the library's largest meeting space will be named the David M. Ruberstein Leadership Hall.
It will host lectures, seminars and functions for government leaders, the military, not-for-profits and corporations, as well as scholars, educators and students, and will be fully wired to broadcast to audiences around the globe.
