Glasgow set to host world cycling event
Glasgow's new Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, which is currently being built ahead of the 2014 Commonwealth Games, is to host the 2013 UCI Juniors Track Cycling World Championships in 2013.
More than 200 cyclists under the age of 19 years old representing 60 countries from across the world are expected to take part in the event, which is expected to generate £2.2m for the local economy. EventScotland chief operating officer, Paul Bush, said: "This is the first step in a strategic approach, in partnership with Glasgow City Council (GCC), to attract and win events in commonwealth sports to utilise and showcase the city's new and existing facilities."
GCC executive member for the Commonwealth Games, Archie Graham, added: "Securing world-class events such as this is central to the legacy of the Commonwealth Games and we will continue to work hard to ensure that there is a lasting legacy for the people of Glasgow from the 2014 Games."
