Gloucestershire CCC ground plans rejected

By Pete Hayman    13 Jan 2012

Plans drawn up by Gloucestershire County Cricket Club (GCCC) and Linden Homes for the redevelopment of Bristol's County Ground have been dismissed by the local authority.

Six members of Bristol City Council's planning committee north voted in opposition to the development proposals, while four supported the club's vision for the venue.

The decision has been described as a "massive disappointment" by GCCC chief executive Tom Richardson and means that international cricket matches will no longer take place at the venue.

Richardson also said the council's failure to approve the development proposals had placed the club's future in Bristol in doubt, hinting at a possible move to Gloucester.

"Our overall future in Bristol is also in doubt. It is no secret that Gloucester would be very keen to have us," he said.

"The funding from the development will be lost and the city risks losing what could be its only sports stadium. We need to consider our options, but time is running out."

GCCC had initially sought to increase the capacity of the County Ground to 20,000 and develop student accommodation, with planning consent in place for the plans.

However, the club decided not to build two new stands adjacent to Kennington Avenue and dropped the student accommodation aspect under revised plans announced last February.
