Golf resort plans revealed for Gilford Castle
The privately-owned Gilford Castle in County Down, Northern Ireland, could be turned into a world-class golf resort following its acquisition by GML Estates.
GML has teamed up with Darren Clarke, the Ulster-based championship golfer, and aims to submit a full planning application for the redevelopment of the castle in early 2005.
Plans will include an 18-hole golf course, a first-class clubhouse, a restaurant, bar, golf shop and a number of other facilities.
The course will be designed by Clarke – a member of the victorious 2004 Ryder Cup team.
Clarke said: “My mindset going into this project is to create a championship golf course, but also one that amateurs can enjoy as well.
“I am very excited about creating my first course at home, especially in a setting as good as the one offered by the landscape at Gilford Castle.”
Part of the castle would be used to develop residential accommodation while the site would also boast the first Darren Clarke Golf Academy.
GML estimated that the total investment in the site will reach around £25m if the plans are accepted.
John Farmer, chair of GML, said: “Darren’s participation will help us in our international marketing effort, plus he will be a huge draw for golfers, beginners and fans from all over the UK and Ireland.”
