Grass roots football hub for Hackney
The Hackney Marshes will be transformed to house a new grass root football hub as part of the London Borough of Hackney Council's redevelopment plan for the area.
Ireland-based John Sisk & Sons has been appointed to deliver the £5.7m facility, to be called Marsh Community Hub when it opens in late 2010.
The project includes improvement works on the existing pitches, a new, full-size artificial turf pitch, a new footbridge over the River Lea to connect the East and South Marshes and a large, multi-use pavilion and clubhouse.
The new building will include community and spectator facilities on the first floor, with changing rooms located at ground-floor level with provision for disabled players.
Designed by Stanton Williams Architects, the building will also include features to help it fit into the landscape, such as a 'living wall' with plants growing up the building.
Mayor of Hackney Jules Pipe said: "The South Marsh Community Hub will provide much needed new changing rooms as well as other community facilities to encourage more people to enjoy Hackney Marshes.
_ "This is a key part of our investment programme which is using the London 2012 Games as an opportunity to give our residents world-class sports facilities alongside the new venues being built at the Olympic Park."
