Green light for Batchwood redevelopment
A new strategy for the redevelopment of Hertfordshire's Batchwood Golf and Tennis Centre has been given the green light by members of St Albans City and District Council (SACDC).
One of the UK's first high performance indoor tennis centres was among the facilities at the complex destroyed by fire in August, along with a bowls clubhouse and a golf clubhouse.
SACDC has resumed indoor tennis provision at the site with a 'bubble' cover over some of the outdoor courts, but now aims to rebuild the three buildings "as quickly as possible".
Under the agreed strategy, the redevelopment will be undertaken as two separate projects that comprise the redevelopment of the tennis centre and the other including the two clubhouses.
SACDC portfolio holder for sports, leisure and heritage Mike Wakely said: "Cabinet has now agreed a strategy so that the tennis centre and the golf and bowls clubhouses are rebuilt as quickly possible."
It is hoped the new tennis centre will be complete in 2013 and will include additional indoor courts, a dance studio, and a larger fitness suite with a strength and conditioning area.
