FC United of Manchester (FCUM) has been awarded planning permission for a new 5,000-capacity sports stadium at the Ronald Johnson Playing Fields in Moston, Manchester.

Manchester City Council's (MCC) planning and highways committee approved the plans at its meeting on 27 October, with the project also to provide facilities for the local community.

In addition to the stadium, the scheme will comprise a community club house with changing rooms; a function space; and a new artificial pitch. Two junior grass pitches will be retained.

As part of its application, FCUM has guaranteed that the centre will be cheaper than standard commercial rates and will be available to the community for a minimum number of hours.

MCC executive member for culture and leisure Mike Amesbury said: "This will mean Moston Juniors FC and other sports groups in the area will have access to a top class facility which will enable them to thrive."

FCUM general manager Andy Walsh added: "We now want to continue to consult with people in Moston and north Manchester to make sure that the facility does deliver real community benefit."

Earlier this year, FCUM was forced to axe plans for a new stadium at the Ten Acres Lane site in Newton Heath, despite receiving consent for the development.
