Rugby Borough Council (RBC) has "unanimously approved" proposals for a new £12.5m leisure centre to be built on the site of a car park at the Warwickshire town's existing venue.

The B3 Architects-designed complex is to be called the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Centre and, once complete in 2013, will lead to the demolition of the 40-year-old Ken Marriott Leisure Centre.

A 25m, eight-lane swimming pool and a 17m x 8m studio pool with a moveable floor are set to be included as part of the project, along with a gym twice the size of the current one.

A climbing wall; multi-purpose areas for dance and martial arts; and a four-court sports hall are also earmarked as part of the new Queen's Diamond Jubilee Centre.

RBC portfolio holder for development and culture Heather Timms said: "We have an opportunity to build a new facility that will meet the needs and aspirations of our residents for a generation.

"The flexibility that the new centre will give us, such as the movable floor in the studio pool, will mean that it will be suitable for a greater variety of activities and for a larger cross-section of our communities."
