HLF boost for Cobham's Crystal Grotto
Restoration works are to be carried out at the Crystal Grotto in Cobham, Surrey, following a decision by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) to contribute £747,400 towards the scheme.
The Painshill Park Trust (PPT) is leading the work, which aims to revitalise what is thought to be one of the most significant 18th century landscapes anywhere in the UK. Work will include the reinstatement of Woollett Bridge, the restoration of the main chamber and improvements to access, along with the creation of two apprenticeships.
PPT chief executive Mike Gove said: "The recreation of the Grotto is an important milestone for the trust, which is also celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. "This is going to make a huge different to this heritage site, which has been painstakingly restored and treasured by many."
The two-year project is scheduled for completion in 2014.
