HMRC ends Notts County tax case

By Pete Hayman    09 Jul 2010

Notts County Football Club (NCFC) has revealed that it is no longer "under debt management" after receiving official clearance from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC).

The Coca Cola League One club had been faced with a winding up petition earlier this year after failing to meet its tax liabilities, but has now repaid all outstanding debts owed to HMRC. NCFC chair Ray Trew said: "The debt to HMRC has been a dark cloud hanging over Notts County since we arrived back in February and we are delighted to be able to close another sorry chapter in the club's recent past.

"Having paid the debt to HMRC, we were just awaiting official clearance from them that we were no long under debt management." Meanwhile, Cardiff City Football Club (CCFC) has confirmed that it has paid off the first month of its outstanding tax bill owed to HMRC as part of efforts to "resolve current financial issues".

CCFC chief executive Gethin Jenkins said: "For the avoidance of doubt, the PAYE tax bill is a monthly issue that we continually endeavour to pay on time. "HMRC is currently taking a firm stance with several football clubs, not just Cardiff City Football as a consequence of historic issues throughout the industry."

Oldham Athletic Football Club (OAFC), which will compete in Coca Cola League One during the 2010-11 season, has announced that chair Simon Blitz has relinquished his position. OAFC director Danny Gazal - who helped rescue the club in 2003 along with Blitz and Simon Corney - has also left the club. Corney has remained at the club and has been named as its the new chair.
