HMRC withdraws Cardiff City court order

By Pete Hayman    26 Nov 2009

Cardiff City Football Club (CCFC) has denied claims that a winding up order has been brought against it by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), following a court hearing on 25 November.

A spokesperson for the Coca-Cola Championship club revealed that the hearing had actually served to see the threat of a winding up order withdrawn after CCFC agreed a payment schedule in relation to unpaid tax debts. The CCFC spokesperson said: "For the avoidance of doubt, Cardiff City Football Club has a payment schedule in place with HMRC, and there is no prospect of the club being wound up.

"Cardiff City Football Club have every confidence in their future financial stability and fully expect to be in a position to make further investment in its playing squad in the January transfer window." The club has also confirmed the appointment of the managing director of Central Malaysian Properties, Dato' Chan Tien Ghee, to its board of directors.

Meanwhile, Lewes Football Club of the Blue Square South competition has survived a winding up order brought against it after the High Court agreed to adjourn the petition for a second time. The club, which has reduced its £107,000 debt by more than half since September, has been given until 13 January 2010 to satisfy HMRC demands over the remainder.

However, King's Lynn Football Club (KLFC) appears to have lost its battle with HMRC after the High Court's decision to wind up the Unibond League Premier Division side. However, KLFC has the option of a seven-day appeal against the decision, which could see the club go out of existence.
