The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has confirmed that six recent visitors to Yosemite National Park have contracted Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS).

Two of the individuals - one from California and another from Pennsylvania - have died as a result of the virus, while three from California have recovered and another is in hospital.

Each of those affected visited the national park between early June and mid July 2012, with four - including both fatalities - having lodged in Curry Village's "signature cabins".

Yosemite National Park closed all tent cabins indefinitely on 28 August in line with CDPH recommendations, while the National Park Service is working to raise public awareness.

Park superintendent Don Neubacher said: "We urge anyone who may have been exposed to the infection to see their doctor at the first sign of symptoms and to advise them of the potential of Hantavirus."
