Claims that a 'historic' agreement had paved the way for Team GB to field football teams at the 2012 Olympic Games have been rebuffed by Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The Scottish Football Association; the Football Association of Wales; and the Irish Football Association have issued a joint statement to reaffirm their opposition to the proposal. It comes after the British Olympic Association announced that it had reached a deal with the Football Association (FA) to field a men's and women's team at next summer's Games.

A spokesperson for the three Home Nation associations said: "We have been consistently clear in explaining the reason for our stance, principally to protect the identity of each national association. "With that in mind, we cannot support nor formally endorse the approach that has been proposed by the Football Association."

FA general secretary Alex Horne said: "As an organisation The FA has been mandated by the BOA to organise a Men's and Women's team for the 2012 Olympic football tournament across the UK. ""All three associations have notified us in writing that they acknowledge that legally we are entitled to support the BOA in the selection process."
