Swansea residents have raised fears over the future of the city's historic St Helen's cricket and rugby ground after the venue was earmarked for potential housing development.

First opened in the late 19th century, the venue entered the history books in 1968 when Sir Garfield Sobers became the first man to hit six sixes off an over in the first class game. However, Swansea Council's new Local Development Plan has now included St Helen's as one of 500 locations across the area that could be turned over to housing.

Phil Holmes, the council's head of planning and economic regeneration, told the Western Mail: "This is the first step in the production of our Local Development Plan. "The next stage will be to look at each candidate site and decide if it is a feasible and sensible suggestion. Some sites may be put forward to the next stage and others will not."
