Hull City FC and FA locked in battle over name change
Hull City Football Club’s lawyers are trying to resurrect a bid to change its name to Hull Tigers, after entering talks with the Football Association (FA).
The FA rejected the club’s initial application, following fan outcry against the name change. But on Monday (16 March), the FA told Hull the club could bid again for a name change for the next football season, though the bid must be submitted by 1 April.
However, Hull believes the club’s original application should be reconsidered following the findings of an arbitration panel and says it does not intend to go through the process for a second time. Meanwhile, the FA says it has nothing to consider until a second bid is lodged.
The Premier League’s legal team and Hull City are now attempting to resolve the issue, which must be sorted within the next fortnight if Hull does want to change its name. Following the initial rejection in April 2014, Hull owner Assem Allam responded by putting the club up for sale and has stated that will remain the case unless Hull City is allowed to rename itself Hull Tigers, which he believes will help with global branding.
