IWM Duxford's 2010 show season

By Sarah Todd    06 May 2010

One of Europe's leading aviation museums, Imperial War Museum (IWM) Duxford, has unveiled the full line-up of events to commemorate 2010 being the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.

Honouring the prominent role played by RAF Duxford in the aerial victory, there is a wide range of events to choose from, including airshows and military vehicle exhibitions.

First to take place and launching the 2010 season, will be the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight event on 15 May. Visitors will be able to see the memorial flight on ground display as well as a range of more contemporary Royal Air Force (RAF) aircraft. There will also be the opportunity for visitors to chat with Battle of Britain veterans while the Central Band of the Royal Air Force will also perform. The event will culminate with a sunset ceremony in honour of all RAF personnel who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

A day later, the Spring Air Show on 16 May will showcase the very best of the RAF, from both the past and the present and will include Battle of Britain re-enactors.

Tickets have now gone on sale for the Flying Legends event on 10-11 July, which is presented by The Fighter Collection and the IWM. Ticket options include a new special two-day ticket, offering savings for those intending to visit on both days.

Flying Legends will boast a line-up of classic propeller-driven combat aircraft from both World Wars, many of which are either unique, or very rare. Iconic airplanes will include the P-51 Mustang, Supermarine Spitfire and Hawker Hurricane. There will also be activities for all ages on the ground, including funfair rides, bungee trampolines, tank rides and demonstrations.

The annual Duxford Classic Car Show on 1 August will have a range of vintage vehicles from the halcyon days of motoring.

A further Battle of Britain Air Show will take place on 4-5 September, a commemoration of the aerial battle that proved to be the strategic turning point in the Second World War. IWM Duxford's air show will remember the pilots and aircraft synonymous with the aerial conflict, with a particular focus given to those pilots who were stationed at RAF Duxford. The show will include squadrons of Battle of Britain aircraft at one of Europe's best-preserved Second World War airfields.

The air show season will draw to a close with a final event, the Autumn Air Show on 10 October.

Visitors can also purchase, in advance, a season pass to all air shows throughout the year. Tickets for all events can be purchased online via www.iwm.org.uk/duxford
