Inauguration of Snøhetta and DIALOG-designed library set for November
Architectural firms Snøhetta and DIALOG have completed construction on Calgary’s New Central public library.
The US$146m (€127m, £112m) building, has been created to "inspire Calgarians for the next 100 years", with an opening date set for 1 November.
The city’s mayor, Naheed Nenshi, said the new centre, which is based at the intersection of downtown Calgary and the East Village neighbourhood, would have a "starring role" in putting Calgary on the map as a regional cultural destination.
"Calgary’s east end is rising," he said, "and evolving into a cultural and entertainment district unlike anywhere else in the City."
In addition to its 400,000-plus book collection, the 240,000sq ft (22,300sq m), six-floor library boasts a performance hall and visitors lounge, as well as community and children’s rooms, a café, and multiple exhibition spaces.
The entire campus, which was shaped to mirror the grassy foothills of the nearby Parkland Natural Region, also includes 75,000sq ft (7,000sq m) of outdoor space.
Snøhetta and DIALOG have been attached to the project since 2013 after both companies outvied other contenders to secure the development contract from the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation.
