New £9m Leisure Centre in the works for Workington
Plans for a new £9m (US$13.7, €10.5m) leisure centre in Workington, Cumbria are in the works after Allerdale council launched public consultations.
The new facility, which could feature a 25m competition standard swimming pool, gym, spinning studio, café, climbing wall, spa, children's party space and both indoor and outdoor courts and pitches, is penned to be completed by the Spring or Summer of 2014.
Potential sites have not yet been identified by the council, who said that it must find out what the local people want before it starts to look at possible designs and locations.
The consultation is being run by both the council and Carlisle Leisure Limited, which runs all its leisure centres until the end of June.
"A new leisure centre will need to be affordable and sustainable as well as realistic in the facilities it will provide and we want to ensure what is provided best suits the needs of the users," said councillor Michael Heaslip, executive member for leisure. "That is why the Council is asking for thoughts and suggestions to help determine the type of facilities and activities you would like to see in the new centre."
