Workington’s £9.4m leisure centre plans unveiled by Allerdale Council
Allerdale Council has revealed images for Workington’s new £9.4m leisure centre in Cumbria.
If given the go ahead following a planning application submission on 14 April, the centre will include a 25m eight-lane swimming pool with spectator seating, a four-court sports hall, soft-play area, 100-station gym, a spinning studio, climbing wall, artificial pitch, two squash courts and a café. The centre will also feature spa facilities including a sauna, steamroom and spa pool.
Private investment is now being sought to fund the building of the family entertainment complex following a public consultation last year.
Michael Heaslip, of Allerdale council, said: “We’ve done a huge amount of research into local authority-run leisure facilities across the country and we were determined to design something even more impressive that the people of Workington and the whole district can enjoy.
“It’s modern, user friendly, energy efficient and, most of all, it will give residents and visitors a fantastic leisure facility.”
The leisure centre will replace Workington’s swimming pool and sports centre at Moorclose – two facilities which date back to the 1970s and have become operationally and environmentally inefficient.
The council is currently displaying the plans to the public today (9 April) and tomorrow. It is expected that the complex, to be built in the town centre, will be open by November 2015.
