Israeli sports events cancelled due to Gaza war
A number of sports events have been cancelled in Israel due to the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas, the organisation that governs the Gaza strip.
The inaugural Israel Open tennis tournament and the country’s Davis Cup World Group tie against Argentina – planned for Tel Aviv in September – have been cancelled after the ATP said Israel wasn’t safe to host the events, while a planned exhibition game involving a team of NBA basketball stars has also been put on ice.
All international club football fixtures have been moved away from the country, with UEFA – the governing body for European football – banning Israel from hosting any Champions League and Europa League matches while fighting continues.
The World Championships of the International Flag Football Confederation, set to begin on 12 August in Jerusalem, has also been cancelled. The event would have hosted nearly 30 teams and more than 600 athletes from 20 countries.
