JW Marriott opening 10 new hotels in 2010
Hotel operator Marriott International will be opening 10 new properties across five countries under its luxury JW Marriott label in 2010.
An investment programme worth in excess of US$2bn (£1.3bn, €1.5bn) will see the total global portfolio of the brand rising to 54 hotels and resorts and 24,000 rooms. The new openings include one each in China (a 330-room hotel in Hangzhou), Colombia (264 rooms in Bogota) and Turkey (416 rooms in Ankara); and three in India (Bengeluru, 250 rooms; Chandigargh, 175 rooms; and Chennai, 371 rooms).
The US saw the opening in January of the 1,002-room JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa - which features two tournament players golf courses, seven restaurants and a 27,000sq ft spa - and in February of the 878-room JW Marriott Hotel Los Angeles at LA Live. Later this year, the JW Marriott Marquis Hotel Miami is scheduled to open in mid-July, offering - amongst other things - 313 rooms; a full-service spa; a Jim McLean Golf School including instruction, golf simulators, putting greens and pro shop; a state-of-the-art fitness centre; virtual bowling and a billiard room; and a 10,000sq ft NBA-approved basketball court.
September will see work completed on the JW Marriott Hotel Chicago, a US$396m (£262m, €295m) restoration of Chicago's historic Continental & Commercial National Bank building dating from 1914. Once open it will provide 610 rooms, a spa, a fitness center, 43 meeting rooms and a choice of restaurants and lounges. A further 20 JW Marriott hotels are also under construction or in development in 13 countries, including locations such as the Maldives, Kazakhstan, Vietnam, Puerto Rico and Indianapolis.
