Jack Nicklaus golf resort planned for Ireland
A consortium of investors has submitted plans to Waterford County Council for a £104m (€150m) resort on the coast of Cahir near Tramore, south-east Ireland.
The as yet unnamed resort project will be located in Islandikane, and will have an 18-hole Jack Nicklaus signature golf course as its centrepiece, along with a period-style hotel with courtyard, health spa, bar, restaurant and function room. A clubhouse, leisure centre with various sports facilities, 51 golf lodges and 28 houses will complete the development.
Investors include Kildare-based businessman Jerry Conlan, former international golfer John Carr – both of Harlequin Resorts – and William Bolster, MD of The Bolster Group.
Martin Cullen, minister for social and family affairs, said: “A Jack Nicklaus golf course would be a huge addition, tourism wise, to Waterford and the south-east.” It has been suggested that the area is in need of a boost to the local economy and this resort could significantly upgrade regional tourism infrastructure.
When completed, the resort would provide employment for up to 350 people, with up to 150 full time jobs created.
Construction for the resort is expected to take two-years once planning permission is granted. Architects for the project are Fewer, Harrington, Lawlor & Partners.
