£26m ice-rink and leisure centre opening in Streatham
Streatham’s new multi-million pound ice and leisure centre, which will replace the Streatham ice rink that closed in 2011, is set to open on 18 November.
As well as a competition-standard ice rink with with 1,000 rink side seats, the centre will house a six-lane, 25m swimming pool; a 13m teaching pool; a four court sports hall and a fitness centre with 100 stations.
The development also incorporates a new Tesco superstore and more than 200 new houses.
The £26m project has been jointly funded by Lambeth Council and Tesco.
Lib Peck, leader of Lambeth council said: “The entire project has been a triumph of design and construction – it’s only the second time in the world that an ice rink has been built above a swimming pool. I know people will be very impressed when they see it.”
Streatham leisure centre had to close in November 2009 due to health and safety concerns. A structural survey identified that it would cost more the £3m for the centre to re-open whilst the hub was being built. The council's cabinet decided to close the centre permanently pending the new facilities.
The temporary ice rink at Brixton will remain open until 18 November.
