New tourism minister to be announced as John Glen named City minister

By Tom Anstey    12 Jan 2018
Glen was named City minister in the cabinet reshuffle / DCMS

Tourism minister John Glen is the latest mover in British prime minister Theresa May’s cabinet reshuffle, after taking over as City minister.

The government is yet to reveal a replacement for Glen, who was only appointed minister for arts, heritage and tourism in June 2017.

With ministerial roles to be confirmed “in due course”, the former Department for Business undersecretary Margot James has joined the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), as has former deputy leader of the House of Commons, Michael Ellis.

The DCMS only recently underwent a shakeup following last year’s general election, when Rob Wilson, former minister for civil society, lost his seat.

As a result, Glen was appointed to his position, while Tracey Crouch took over the duties of Wilson as parliamentary undersecretary for sport and civil society.

Former minister for culture and digital, Matt Hancock, narrowed his remit to focus purely on digital, with arts and culture falling under the watch of Glen.

In the recent reshuffle, Hancock was promoted to lead the DCMS, named secretary of state for digital, culture, media and sport, replacing Karen Bradley, who this week was made Northern Ireland secretary.

“This government is about building a country fit for the future – one that truly works for everyone with a stronger economy and a fairer society,” said May.

“This reshuffle helps us do just that by bringing fresh talent into government, boosting delivery in key policy areas and ensuring the government looks more like the country it serves.

“It also allows a new generation of gifted ministers to step up and make life better for people across the whole UK.”
