Kids Swim 4 Free in Exeter with DC Leisure
Exeter City Council has invested £22,500 in a new swimming programme designed to help tackle junior obesity levels.
Aimed at the city’s under-18 population, the Swim 4 Free campaign – launched by the council and DC Leisure – is running at Exeter’s Pyramids Swimming and Leisure Centre. The campaign offers a free Rookie Lifeguard training course, as well as free general swimming and ‘wet ‘n’ wild’ sessions.
Mark Washington, contract manager for DC Leisure, said: “Since the scheme launched at the beginning of May, we have issued more than 1,300 cards and usage has increased considerably.”
Pete Edwards, lead councillor for environment and leisure, added: “We are continually looking at ways to reduce the increasing childhood obesity levels, and felt that a swimming programme would be both inclusive and fun.
“We are hoping to encourage participation across the whole age range, as well as promote activities that can be enjoyed by the entire family. We have implemented a comprehensive marketing campaign which has included leaflet drops, direct mail and local media coverage.”
The Pyramids facility is one of six managed by DC Leisure on behalf of Exeter City Council.
