Kritt Arkitekter transform century-old cruise line headquarters into boutique hotel in Norway
The Amerikalinjen Hotel – once the main office of one of Norway's earliest transatlantic cruise lines – has opened in Oslo.
Situated on Jernbanetorget Square near the city's opera, the 6,000 sq m Den Norske Amerikalinje (Norwegian American Line) building now features refreshed exteriors by studio Kritt Arkitekter as well as a number of expanded private and common areas designed by Finnish studio Puroplan.
The 122-key property, which was originally built in 1919, has mostly retained its Baroque Revival accents and ornaments, such as its balustraded roof and triton entryway sculptures.
In keeping with the defunct cruise company's transmarine activities, the hotel's guest rooms have an oceanic theme and are furnished with designer upholstery and fixtures by Birger Dahl, Hadeland Glassverk, and Eikund.
Amerikalinjen's leisure and dining facilities also pay tribute to Den Norske'a Roaring Twenties origins and include a cocktail bar, a speakeasy-esque jazz club, a brasserie, and a garden, as well as a spa area with a gym, sauna, and plunge pool.
In a description from its website, Amerikalinjen's operator, Preferred Hotels and Resorts, said spaces were crafted to conjure up feelings of "adventure".
The hotel, expected to become a destination in its own right, also boasts a nautical-inspired library and an art collection curated by Sune Nordgren, founding director of the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead, UK.
