LIW demo targets girls' fitness

By Tim Nash    18 Sep 2008

The Fitness Industry Association's (FIA) acclaimed go initiative, which targets obesity and inactivity in teenage girls, will be showcased at next week's Leisure Industry Week (LIW, 23-25 September, Birmingham NEC) with a series of dance-based presentations.

Being staged on Wednesday 24 September and featuring girls from Kingsbury High School, London, the morning demonstrations in the Vittel Sports Arena will be instructor-led dance- and aerobic-based sessions that illustrate how the programme 'breaks down' choreography, and will culminate in performance routines. The afternoon showcases in the Lucozade Fitness Arena will focus on rehearsed dance performances.

Developed in 2006, the FIA's go programme targets girls in their final year of secondary school - a key age when girls' activity levels drop off.

Studies show that women prefer non-competitive forms of exercise such as aerobics and swimming to team sports and so go introduces them to activities such as yoga, pilates, and other dynamic studio and gym-based classes as alternatives to the traditional, competitive school sports that are offered with the curriculum.

Andrée Deane, FIA CEO, said: "LIW is the ideal venue to showcase go; it builds on our strong partnership with LIW and the programme aligns perfectly with one of the show's central themes of child/youth fitness.

"Importantly, the programme is based on sustainability: FIA member clubs that are involved have to provide exit routes at their facilities for the girls to feed into following the programme. We are aiming to impact their attitude towards and physical take up of activity on a long-term basis and help them lay the foundations for a healthy life."

Leisure Industry Week (LIW) 2008, incorporating Sports Development Week, will be held at the Birmingham NEC on 23-25 September 2008. The event is supported by industry-wide trade associations including Sport England, the FIA, ISPAL and the British Association of Leisure Parks, Piers and Attractions (BALPPA).
