League confirms Chester City expulsion

By Pete Hayman    26 Feb 2010

Chester City Football Club (CCFC) has been expelled from the Blue Square Premier after member clubs voted in favour of recommendations put forward by Football Conference officials.

The club, which started the 2009-10 season with a 25-point deduction after breaching financial regulations, has been suspended from the competition since 11 February after failing to fulfil two fixtures. After being forced to call off a fixture at Forest Green Rovers Football Club at short notice, CCFC was hit by the news that a home fixture against Wrexham Football Club could not proceed after failing to pay police costs.

A statement from the Football Conference said: "Member clubs of the Football Conference, at a general meeting held today (26 February), voted in support of the board of directors recommendation to erase Chester City (2004) FC from membership in accordance with Article 5.2." Meanwhile, Gloucester City Football Club (GCFC) is facing the prospect of being relegated from the Blue Square North competition if it fails to upgrade the Corinium Stadium by 31 March.

The club is sharing the ground with Cirencester Town Football Club, but has revealed that neither club will be able to meet the cost of providing additional terracing required under Football Conference regulations. AFC Bournemouth of Coca-Cola League Two has reportedly been served with a fresh winding up order by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) over a £314,000 tax bill, which is due to be paid by 31 March.

Chair Eddie Mitchell told BBC Radio Solent that £100,000 could be paid immediately towards settling the debt, which arose while the club was dealing with clearing a previous HMRC deficit. Cardiff City Football Club, which competes in the Coca-Cola Championship, has been given the green light to proceed with the £450,000 sale of land for the construction of a House of Sport.

Club director Steve Borley has acquired the site after an overwhelming majority voted in favour of the proposals at an extraordinary general meeting on 24 February. Elsewhere, Cambridge United Football Club has confirmed that it has secured a deal to sell its ground to Grosvenor Estates, which will see the developer take control of the site from late April.
