Lee Valley plans VeloPark
Lee Valley Regional Park Authority (LVRPA) has appointed a team to undertake a feasibility study for a new VeloPark – a potential Olympic venue should London win its bid to host the 2012 Games.
The complex is planned for LVRPA’s Eastway Sports centre and Cycle Circuit sites in east London and would consist of an indoor velodrome, an international competition-standard BMX track, a road track and further cycling facilities.
The VeloPark, which is expected to cost between £15-30m and will be jointly funded by LVRPA and Sport England, would become the home of British Cycling in south-east England.
The feasibility team – consisting of architects, FaulknerBrowns alongside cost consultants, Davis Longdon; structural consultants, Anthony Hunt Associates and sport and planning consultants, Drivers Jonas – will ensure the VeloPark meets the needs of the existing users of the Eastway circuits as well as those of the Olympic events and also establish criteria to ensure that legacy and regeneration benefits are provided for the local community.
If the plans go ahead, the indoor velodrome will be the second in England, alongside the National Cycling Centre in Manchester (pictured), which was built for the 2002 Commonwealth Games and designed by FaulknerBrowns.
The feasibility team is expected to complete its study by October this year.
