Legacy pool to be installed at Leisurelink centre
Construction of the new AUD$31m (£15.2m, US$22.5m, 16.9m euro) Leisurelink centre in Geelong, Victoria, Australia, is nearing completion, with the base recently being poured ready for the installation of a 50m legacy swimming pool from the 2007 World Swimming Championships.
The City of Greater Geelong has provided AUD$28m (£13.7m, US$20.4m, 15.3m euro) for the new Leisurelink centre and the state government has contributed AUD$2m (£0.98m, US$1.5m, 1.1m euro) plus the 50m legacy pool.
Member for South Barwon, Michael Crutchfield and City of Greater Geelong Mayor Cr John Mitchell, inspected the site on 31 March.
"The centre will be huge; it will house a 50-metre pool, Gold Coast theme park style waterslides and a wide range of other gym and aquatic facilities," said Mitchell.
Once complete, alongside the eight-lane 50m pool, the centre will boast a gym and aerobics complex; the Cannon Bowl Waterslide - a 12m to 15m high slide featuring a large bowl which swirls swimmers around before dropping them out of a hole into a pool; the Black Hole Waterslide - a 12m to 15m high twisting tube ride in total darkness until swimmers reach the final splashdown; a Water Adventure Park featuring water cannons, an overhead tipping bucket and a spinning water wheel; a kids' splash pad with rubber flooring play space with water shooting from fountains and jets at random; a learn to swim pool; a hydro pool with ramp access; a spa and sauna, multi-purpose rooms and separate pool and gym changing facilities.
