Premier League football clubs have been warned not to exploit supporters by charging "over the odds" for ticket prices and merchandise, following new research published by the Liberal Democrats.

Liberal Democrat culture spokesperson Don Foster said the cost of going to a Premier League match currently varies between each of the 20 clubs, with supporters asked to pay up to £92 for a ticket. According to the party's research, the cheapest price for a pint of lager at stadiums - £2.70 - is above the national average, while the cost of a replica shirt can differ from club to club by more than £10.

Foster said: "Not only do fans have to pay sky high prices for tickets, but if they want to enjoy a pint of lager they can end up paying way over the odds. Add this to the high price for team merchandise, and the bill begins to look very steep. "Clubs must not continue to take advantage of the goodwill of their dedicated followers, particularly in this time of economic recession."
