New high street planned for area around Liverpool FC’s Anfield stadium
A brand new high street could be built on the doorstep of Liverpool’s Anfield stadium as part of a £260m (US$341.7m, €306.1m) regeneration plan in the city.
Shops, commercial premises, homes and apartments are likely to be built next to the historic ground, which has separately undergone some improvement work itself this summer.
If the plan gets the green light several derelict buildings that occupy the space will be demolished or rebuilt, with the adjacent road narrowed to create “pedestrian-friendly” wider pavements.
Work will be carried out in phases over the next three-to-four years. The proposal also includes landscape gardens and a hotel close to the high street.
“While the work on our new Main Stand is approaching completion, we recognise that the creation of a new high street would be transformational for the area, attracting new jobs and creating new business,” said Liverpool FC chief executive Ian Ayre.
“It would make Anfield a better place to live, work and visit.”
