Local authorities rewarded for racial equality

30 Nov 2004

Six local authorities have been recognised for their work in promoting racial equality at the first national equality in sport conference held in London recently.

Bradford, Bristol, Kirklees, Nottingham, Sandwell and Cloughs Councils were the first local authorities in England to receive a preliminary award under the new Race Equality Standard – Promoting Racial Equality Through Sport – the result of a working partnership between Sporting Equals and the Local Government Association.

There are three levels of award, with the preliminary indicating the local authority has demonstrated its commitment to understanding and addressing the barriers which perpetuate racial inequality and passed the commitment down to its staff. The authorities have also designed race equality policy and action plans, profiled staff and users and used the information to identify and address any gaps.

The director of Sporting Equals, Novlette Rennie, said: “The award recognises real achievement. The Race Equality Standard will help widen access and increase the participation and involvement in sport and physical activity from under-represented ethnic minority individuals, groups and committees.

“It will assist local authorities in developing race equality-proofed policies, structures and processes and will allow for performance to be assessed, ensuring continuous improvement in the design and delivery of sports and leisure services.”

Sporting Equals is a national initiative funded by Sport England and the Commission for Racial Equality. Details: www.cre.gov.uk/speqs
