A report to go before Wakefield Council's cabinet next week (10 April) has recommended that a local community trust is awarded a 25-year lease to Lightwaves Leisure Centre.

The report calls for Next Generation/Lightwaves Leisure and Community Trust to be given control of the facility by the local authority – subject to a joint working agreement – to ensure its continued use as a sports centre.

Existing wet facilities at the venue will be transferred to Wakefield's new Sun Lane Leisure Centre later this summer. Dry activities will end when Lightwaves closes as a council site.

However, the trust is proposing to maintain the sports hall, multi-use rooms, boxing club and former squash club.
