London could become the new home of ‘sport tech’ if a strategic plan succeeds in bringing sport and technology businesses closer together.

The plan, published by London Sport, aims to get more Londoners using technology to be active – and more organisations using it to help them.

Launched last night (30 November), Making London the Heart of the Sport Tech World sets out ways to improve the use of technology in the sector.

“I’m convinced technology can be the spark that ignites a revolution in the way that we, as Londoners, experience sport in our daily lives,” said Alex Zurita, London Sport specialist advisor – technology for participation.

“In developing this plan, we’ve been fortunate to have the input of a vast range of organisations from across London and the country – both those who work in technology and those who work in sport.

“London is already a leading light for ‘fin tech’, ‘food tech’, ‘fashion tech’, cybersecurity and so many other areas – now it’s sport’s turn to seize the digital opportunity, and deliver positive outcomes for health and wellbeing in the capital, and across the world.”

The collaboration between sport and tech aims to increase diversity in the sectors, break down social boundaries, improve mental wellbeing and strengthen physical health – with the ultimate aim of making London the most physically active city in the world.
